Rules and etiquette

When fencing with the club, please keep the following in mind:

SCFC Rules & Expectations

• Enjoy yourself and be respectful of other fencers!
• SCFC members fence for free at all club practices, but they are open to members, non-fencing members, and nonmembers alike.
• If you are not a current member of the club, you may fence during a club practice by paying the $5 floor fee OR taking a private lesson – the floor fee is included in the price of a lesson. The floor fee does not entitle a fencer to use club equipment or the armory. Equipment may be rented for an additional fee.
• Fencers are expected to purchase and use their own gear within a reasonable amount of time, see timetable above. Club gear may be available at the discretion of the Floor Leader, especially for newer members of the organization.
• All fencers taking part in a club practice must own their own glove and plastron, also known as an underarm protector. Women must wear chest protection. New members are required to purchase these items right away.
• Fencers must wear appropriate, safe attire. This is defined as clothing that at minimum covers all skin above the knees for foil and sabre, with the exception of the non-weapon hand. Epee fencers must be covered from head to toe, with the exception of the non-weapon hand. Clothing should not have cargo pockets or other likely-to-snag features, also no denim. Athletic shoes must be worn, other clothing should be gym-appropriate as well.
• If you fence electric on a given night, you are required to help set it up and/or take it down. Everyone who uses it is expected to assist with putting it out or away. If a fencer repeatedly abstains from joining the other club members and helping out in this simple way, he or she will not be allowed to fence electric. Everyone’s help in this regard is much appreciated.
• Please help keep the facility clean and orderly. Unless visiting the restroom, all fencers and visitors must remain in the gymnasium at all times.
• No alcohol is allowed on the premises.
• The Floor Leader is in charge of the building and he/she will not allow dangerous or out-of-control fencing. Fencers fencing dangerously will be warned. Continued unsafe fencing or inappropriate behavior will result in ejection from the practice venue. The Floor Leader and the SCFC officers are also empowered to eject any fencer who is not adhering to the club rules and expectations listed here.
• All club members are strongly encouraged to take part in local events such as tournaments, demonstrations, clinics, et cetera. Regular attendance at club practices is also expected and encouraged.
