When fencing with the club, please keep the following in mind:
SCFC Rules & Expectations
- Enjoy yourself and be respectful of other fencers!
- Fencers are expected to purchase and use their own gear within a reasonable amount of time, see timetable above. Club gear may be available at the discretion of the Floor Leader, especially for newer members of the organization.
- Taking part in club drills is crucial to maintaining skills and honing “the basics” for all fencers. The Floor Leader will engage participants in footwork, distance, lunging, tip control, and parry/riposte drills, as well as other appropriate exercises at the start of each practice.
- Fencers must wear appropriate, safe attire. This is defined as clothing that at minimum covers all skin above the knees for foil and saber, with the exception of the non-weapon hand. Epee fencers must be covered from head to toe, with the exception of the non-weapon hand. Clothing should not have cargo pockets or other likely-to-snag features, also no denim. Athletic shoes must be worn, other clothing should be gym-appropriate as well. All fencers taking part in a club practice must own their own glove and plastron, also known as an underarm protector. Women must wear chest protection. New members are required to purchase these items right away.
- If you fence electric on a given night, you are required to help set it up and/or take it down. Everyone who uses it is expected to assist with putting it out or away.
- If you are not a current member of the club, you may fence during a club practice by paying the $5 floor fee. This fee for guests does not entitle a fencer to use club equipment or the armory. Equipment may be rented for an additional fee. Most fencers may pay the floor fee up to four times in a given trimester before being required to join. Brand-new fencers who are unable to take the Intro class and are taking private lessons in order to learn are also allowed to pay the floor fee up to four times before being required to join the club. Any other exceptions must be approved by the club President. Intro fencers are required to join the club upon completion of the course if they wish to participate in club practices.
- Please help keep the facility clean and orderly. No alcohol is allowed on the premises.
- The Floor Leader leads the club practice and is in charge of the building. He/she will not allow dangerous or out-of-control fencing. Fencers fencing dangerously will be warned. Continued unsafe fencing or inappropriate behavior will result in ejection from the practice venue. The Floor Leader and the SCFC officers are also empowered to eject any fencer who is not adhering to the club rules and expectations listed here.
- All club members are expected to attend local tournaments and are also strongly encouraged to attend other USFA competitions in the area. Fencers are also asked to help with local events such as demonstrations, workshops, clinics, etc. Regular attendance at club practices by all members is also expected and encouraged.
